State Senate Redistricting: Seliger’s First Take

» Statesman: Travis County would be split four ways under state Senate redistricting map
» Star-Telegram: Senate redistricting map would split Tarrant among four districts

I'm not one who believes that every bad map will automatically be rejected by the Justice Department, but this is one map that I'd bet a little bit on coming back unless it gets an overhaul. The division of Tarrant County minorities in this map is on par with what the Congressional map of 2003 did in the DFW area. And the 2003 map only got through the DOJ because of the political appointees over-ruling the career Voting Rights lawyers.

Not surprisingly, two of the Anglo Dems in the State Senate are targets in Seliger's first draft. That would be Senators Wendy Davis of Fort Worth and Kirk Watson of Austin. Houston Sen. John Whitmire's district is relatively unchanged from it's 2001 version. I've got my request in for the election data for this map, but Watson's SD14 looks like it still leans Dem. Davis' SD10, however, is clearly intended to be an easy flip back to the GOP status the district had prior to Davis' win in 2008.

The full-page version is pulling a fairly hefty 4MB map file, so no embed here for that. Instead, here's the full page view and here's the Google Earth file. If time permits later today, I'll create a series of comparison maps of each district. For now, here's the two biggest question marks of this map, showing the current boundaries with the Seliger-proposed districts that carve them up.

Senate District 10:
The 2001 version of SD10 is outlined in black, with the 2011 districts colored in behind it. The one open gap in the 2001 version of the district is filled in with SD22.

Senate District 14:
The 2001 version of SD14 is outlined in black, with the 2011 districts colored in behind it. The one gap in the 2001 version of the district is filled in with SD25.
