My Top Tunes For the Past Year

December 31, 2010 Assorted Entertainment No Comments

One and only one benefit of the past year’s slacking of the reading habit – I’ve had to scratch a lot harder for more new music. I seem to remember there being years where I had a hard time remembering the last new tune I’d purchased. This time around, I had to check to make sure these were all 2010 releases as a few that are still on heavy rotation are from 2009.

Anyways, as far as year-end lists go, here’s my list of tunes I’m happy to have discovered over the past year.

From the AOR/Melodic Rock catalog …
» Last Autumn’s Dream – Come Rain or Shine
» Salute – Feed Your Hunger
» Salute – I Will Be There

Both of these bands feature the same lead singer, Mickael Erlandsson. I happened to stumble onto a new tune by Salute on internet radio during work one day. Pretty good discovery.

From the catalog of “loud crunchy guitar-sounding stuff” …
» Volbeat – Thanks
» Bouncing Souls – I Think That the World …
» Bouncing Souls – Mental Bits

What can I say? … I like to hear loud things go crunch. And even still, this is a pretty tame three-pack for that.

From the CCM catalog …
» Lincoln Brewster – Best Days
» Sandra McCracken – Justice Will Roll Down
» Sandra McCracken – I Can’t Help Myself

For the past several years, I’ve enjoyed Derek Webb’s music while regretting that I couldn’t get into his wife’s work. Now she’s got two tracks that I can’t take off of heavy rotation and I’m skipping out on buying his latest. On a sidenote, “I Can’t Help Myself” goes down as the first tune to have heard at Ecclesia Church AFTER I had already been listening to the song for a good long while. It’s a very different world, musically, at Ecclesia, so that’s not an insignificant tidbit. Needless to say, I was floored when I heard it in church.

From the Guitar Hero catalog …
» Paul Gilbert – Olympic

Slim pickings for the guitar pluckers. But then again, I’ve been happily trying my own hand at making music along these lines. Not very well, mind you … just trying.

Not So Heavy Rotation

Since the blogging is slowing down due to some campaign-related workload, I think it’s an opportune moment for a navel-gazing look at my MP3 playlist. For one, it’s a better change of pace to go from campaign work to “anything but politics” than it is to riff off of the news of the weird. Besides, [...]

Early Weekend Amusement

Work, more work, and still more work. And if that weren’t enough, there’s an additional, never-ending supply of even more work that I need to muddle my way through these days. In what little amount of time passes for “marginally free” these days, I am doing a bit of dabbling on ye olde almanac to [...]

Screen-cap below is what caught my interest from an ad seen on the Weather Channel last night. At first, I thought the whole thing was a parody. Then, after catching up on the history involved, I could only think “Why is Paul Gilbert in that ad?” Since then, the question that lingers is “When did [...]

Happy New Year

December 31, 2010

How New Year’s was meant to be rung in … with Sandra Bernhard egging on impressionable disco-dancers to get their groove on to some Winger! Reminds me, since this video is now 21 years old, that means Kip Winger’s hair is now old enough to vote. Related Posts:Early Weekend AmusementMy Top Tunes For the Past [...]
