Since the blogging is slowing down due to some campaign-related workload, I think it’s an opportune moment for a navel-gazing look at my MP3 playlist. For one, it’s a better change of pace to go from campaign work to “anything but politics” than it is to riff off of the news of the weird. Besides, [...]

Work, more work, and still more work. And if that weren’t enough, there’s an additional, never-ending supply of even more work that I need to muddle my way through these days. In what little amount of time passes for “marginally free” these days, I am doing a bit of dabbling on ye olde almanac to [...]

Thirty-seven days until Mr. Big comes to Houston. In a perfect world, they would include a few Paul Gilbert solo tunes. Related Posts:February is Mr. Big MonthNot So Heavy RotationEarly Weekend AmusementTuesday

One and only one benefit of the past year’s slacking of the reading habit – I’ve had to scratch a lot harder for more new music. I seem to remember there being years where I had a hard time remembering the last new tune I’d purchased. This time around, I had to check to make [...]

That doesn’t look like a Tele headstock, three tuning posts per side. Tele heads have all posts on top side. Looks like some kind of Gibson.
Definitely not an authentic Fender tele, just a reference to the body shape. Stands out to me since my own is a Charvel Tele with the added luxury of a Fender Strat neck. I think 90-95% of what I’ve seen Gilbert play, post-Mr. Big, has been a Strat design. At least until Ibanez created their Iceman models.
I recall seeing him with a Flying V, too. Isn’t that known to be a really crappy guitar?
And I what’s a Charvel Tele?
Yeah, the V and the Beatles/violin-style guitar are the two exceptions I was thinking of with Gilbert. I’m not aware of there being a basis for considering the V a crappy guitar, but it’s a very distinctive sound that’s not for everyone. There’s enough high-end users who rely on the sound to make a living, but I’ll stick with mimicking the sound with pickup selection and effects. Works really well for harmony lines.
Neglected the final question by accident. Charvel teles can be seen here on the bottom two photos. I think they’ve stopped making them since they never sold well. I picked mine up right about the time they started to discount them in order to clear them out. Worked well for me since I was looking for a good quality guitar in the $7-800 range (not another cheapy beginner guitar and also not an inexpensive Student/Studio version of the real guitar you wish you had). Review of the line that includes the teles can be read here.
