Why The Games Are In Arlington

» Chron: Central-site title games add hoopla, drawbacks
» DMN: Record crowd for HS title games at Cowboys Stadium could mean $1 million playoff payoff

Two good reads on how five state championship games came to be played this weekend at JerryWorld (with a few more played last weekend and several more played in nearby Mansfield). Not surprisingly, money is factor. Equally unsurprising: not every coach loves the idea. Today, Aledo makes a short trip across Fort Worth for the game while La Marque made the significantly longer haul yesterday. It'll be a similar situation when Trinity makes the short jog over for tomorrow's game while Pearland buses the kids up on gameday (or so I've heard).

Personally, I kinda like the hoopla that a multi-game championship lineup brings. It's part of the reason I booked plans well before it was guaranteed that my school would be playing for a title. Besides, it's not like there's absolutely zero advantage to playing at a neutral site, as some teams' fan/parent base travel better than others. If you've watched the occasional solo title game played at Waco or Austin or points elsewhere, it's very awkward watching a poorly attended game with that much on the line.
